Josh Whitmore
I originally tried to go big in cycling as a mountain bike racer. I started racing off-road at 14 and put the pedal to the floor for training for the next 6 years. I did decently well as a junior, placing well at the national level. I turned pro at 19 and spent a couple years as pack fodder in the back of the big pro mountain bike races in the mid 90's.
Without showing much promise for a big money pro contract, I decided to pursue other life goals. I quit racing, went to school, and worked for several years as a backpacking, rock climbing, mountaineering, paddling guide for places like Outward Bound and NOLS.
Over the last couple years I have gotten back into cycling, this time as a road racer. I've greatly enjoyed working with the team and figuring out how we can topple the big names in the races we enter. Occasionally we pull it off, proving that you don't have to be the strongest person in a road race to win it. Race smarts and team tactics can tip the scales in your favor.
